What Should Be Included in an Allied Health Business Diagnostic

When an allied health practice owner decides it is time to review their commercial performance, they are often faced with a barrage of generic business health checks. But a physiotherapy clinic or psychology practice is not a standard retail business. It has unique compliance, structuring, and revenue dynamics.

So, what should be included in an allied health business diagnostic? If a diagnostic tool does not assess the specific commercial realities of the allied health and NDIS sectors, it will provide flawed advice.

The 4 Essential Components of an Allied Health Diagnostic

At Shuriken Advisory Group, we have evaluated hundreds of practices across Australia. We developed the CARE Framework because we found that standard accounting reviews missed the structural issues that actually dictate practice success. A rigorous allied health business diagnostic must evaluate the following four areas:

1. Financial Clarity and Margin Analysis

A diagnostic must go beyond top-line revenue. It must assess your clinician utilisation rates (the percentage of available hours actually billed) and your gross profit margins per service line. For NDIS providers, it must also evaluate your cash flow cycle and debtor days, as payment delays are a primary cause of practice failure.

2. Accountability and Systems

Does the practice rely entirely on the owner to function? A proper diagnostic evaluates your management reporting systems and your team structure. Critically, it must review your contractor vs employee arrangements, as the ATO is actively auditing allied health clinics for sham contracting.

3. Risk and Resilience

Clinical risk is covered by insurance, but what about commercial risk? The diagnostic must review your corporate structure. Are you operating as a sole trader or simple partnership? If so, your personal assets (like your family home) are exposed. It must also assess revenue concentration—if more than 30% of your revenue comes from a single NDIS plan manager, your business is highly vulnerable.

4. Enterprise Value and Exit Readiness

Finally, a diagnostic must assess the sellable value of the practice. If the clinic’s revenue drops by 50% when the founder takes a holiday, the business has very little enterprise value. The diagnostic should highlight the gap between your current valuation and your ultimate exit goal.

The CARE Assessment: The Industry Standard Diagnostic

If you want a diagnostic tool that covers all four of these essential components, take the CARE Assessment. Developed by Shuriken Advisory Group specifically for Australian allied health practices, it is a free, 5-minute online evaluation that delivers immediate, actionable commercial insights.
