Smart Goal Setting: How To Think Profit First

Smart goal setting can help you take your business from zero to hero so quickly, you’ll be surprised at how much you can grow in a reduced time-frame. But setting your goals is winning only half of the battle.

In this 2 Minute Accountant episode, Andrew Jeffers highlights the importance of implementing solid systems that will help you achieve your goals – and shows you why successful athletes are using the same formula.

Winning at business is like winning an Olympic competition

The most successful athletes have something in common with you, a business owner. People like Shelley Taylor Smith, Kieren Perkins, Steven Bradbury or Dean Lukin broke records and achieved amazing things in their careers. Just like you’re building a business from scratch.

Their secret?

They had well-defined goals, and they implemented a solid process of achieving those goals.

Are you doing the same in your business?

Did you know…? Statistics say that over 70% of small businesses are struggling to make the minimum wage for themselves. Uh-oh…

Smart goal setting: Why are you in business?

What happens a lot of the time in business is we have a goal. More often than not that goal is to make some money. But we don’t quantify that.

Ask yourself, “Am I in business to give a job to my employees?”

The answer is “No.”

The purpose of being in business is to actually make some money. Money and profit are the rewards for taking the risk. You should be making money, y paying your staff and then have more than enough for yourself.

Smart goal setting: How do you get our head around making a profit?

What you need to focus on is profit first.

Decide how much profit you want to make. That has to be your goal. Everything else has to work around it.

To be able to make your business work for you, you want to get sharp on where you want to end up first. Have that goal.

An athlete’s goal might be to earn a gold medal. Your goal should be to make a profit in your business, and it can change depending on your industry.

But if you are not sharp about what you want, you are less likely to get it.
